“Don’t Look Now” is based off of a short story of the same name by writer Daphne Du Maurier, who is known for her mix of romanticism and mystery. John and Laura Baxter (Donald Sutherland and Julie Christie) are parents trying to recover from the death of their young daughter, who drowned in the family’s pool. The situation escalates in an eerie way when the couple takes a working vacation in Venice to try and survive the emotional time. Elderly sisters claim they are speaking with the Baxter’s dead daughter, and the toll on the couple becomes greater as John begins to have his own visions of a little girl in a red raincoat much like the one his daughter wore.
This thriller is perfect for a rainy afternoon. Du Maurier’s story is esoteric enough to keep you guessing, and director Nicolas Roeg offers a stunning visual presentation of the city of Venice and a chilling interpretation of Du Maurier’s work.
